How it works

Know which costs belong where

The calculator separates direct costs from the fixed costs that keep the business running.

  1. Enter total revenue for the period you are reviewing.
  2. Add cost of goods sold: the direct cost of the products or services you delivered.
  3. Add operating, marketing, and other expenses. These are treated as fixed expenses for the break-even calculation.
  4. Set a tax rate if you want an after-tax estimate. Tax applies only when profit before tax is positive.
  5. Use the gross and net margins to compare pricing, cost changes, or different periods.

The formulas used

  • Gross profitRevenue - COGS
  • Net profit before taxRevenue - all expenses
  • Gross marginGross profit / revenue
  • Net marginNet profit / revenue
  • Break-even revenueFixed expenses / gross margin

Break-even is not available when gross margin is zero or negative, because selling more would not cover fixed costs.

FAQ

Profit Calculator questions

Short answers about margins, tax, break-even, and privacy.

What is the difference between gross profit and net profit?

Gross profit is revenue minus the cost of goods sold. Net profit before tax is revenue minus all expenses, including cost of goods sold, operating costs, marketing, and other costs.

How is profit margin calculated?

Gross margin is gross profit divided by revenue. Net margin before tax is net profit before tax divided by revenue. Both are shown as percentages.

What does break-even revenue mean?

Break-even revenue is the sales amount needed to cover fixed expenses after accounting for the cost of goods sold. This calculator divides operating, marketing, and other fixed expenses by the gross margin ratio. It cannot calculate break-even when the gross margin is zero or negative.

Does the Profit Calculator include tax?

It applies the tax rate you enter to positive profit before tax. If profit before tax is zero or negative, no tax is subtracted. The result is an estimate, not tax advice.

Is my financial data stored?

No. The calculator runs locally in your browser. Your revenue and expense figures are not sent to a TasklyTools server.

Can I use a different currency?

Yes. Choose a currency from the list and the result labels update. The calculator formats the numbers you enter; it does not convert between currencies.
